Murchison Falls National Park Safari Uganda

Murchison Falls National Park in found in northwestern Uganda, and it the largest in the country covering 3893 sq km.  Previously the park hosted a number of prominent guests as highlighted below:  in 1907 Winston Churchill, in 1909 Theodore Roosevelt, in 1954 Ernest Hemingway, several royal personalities from Britain including the Queen Mother and the Prince of Wales; and then in 1951, featured in the shooting of the movie: ‘The African Queen’. What to do in Murchison falls National Park

Game Drives

Due to the varied habitats the park includes the tropical forest, woodland, River Nile, savanna as well as wetlands, there are more than 70 mammal species plus 450 species of birds. During our exciting game drives you will see different animals such elephants, warthogs, oribi, Cape buffaloes, hippos, Lions, leopards, hartebeests, giant Nile crocodiles, Rothschild’s giraffes as well as the Uganda kobs, in addition to various birds like the shoebill stork also known as the whalehead.

Boat Rides in Murchison Falls Park

This is the highlight during a Uganda Safari in the Murchison National Park.

The Boat Cruise is a 2 hours ride to the bottom of the waterfalls. They start in the morning at 9.00 am as well as in the afternoon at 2:00pm each day. You will have closer views of wildlife including the giant Nile Crocodiles, hippos, buffaloes, elephants, and several birds. This cruise takes you to the bottom of the waterfalls and you will watch the waters of the Nile squeeze through the narrow 7 meter gorge and thunderously drop below over a height of 43 meters.

Hike to the Top of the Waterfalls

You may take a smaller boat to the bottom of the waterfalls and then hike up to the top of the waterfalls for a better view of the powerful falls.

Explore Rabongo and Kaniyo-Pabidi forests

Kaniyo Pabidi forest is one of the oldest and largest mahogany forests in Uganda. There are a number of forest hikes offered to visitors and during these you can also enjoy a Chimpanzee trekking Safari. You will encounter different wildlife including various monkeys, bats and birds.

Best time to visit in Murchison Falls National Park

This park experiences two major seasons, and these are the dry and wet season. the best time to visit is during the dry months when the animals are around the water holes and the roads are more accessible. The best time months to visit are during the dry months, avoid the wet months.

Dry months are December to February and June to July.  However

Wettest months: April and November

How to get to Murchison Falls National Park

The park can be accessed either by air or road transport

By Air

There are a number of airstrips around this park including Pakuba airstrip, Paraa and Bugungu airstrip.

By road Transport:

From Kampala through Masindi and river crossing at Paraa

Another route takes you via Budongo forest

You can enter the park through the various gates:  Wankwar Gate, Chobe Gate and Tangi Gate
