Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Kigali-Akagera National Park

You will be received by a representative from Africa Nature Trekkers and one of our drivers / safari guides at Kigali International Airport who will transfer you to your hotel for a briefing and relaxing. After your breakfast you will head to Akagera National Park in the East of the country. As you enter take an evening game drive and look out for some big five and other animal species like the Lions, Elephants, Buffaloes, Giraffe, warthogs, water bucks, bush bucks, oribi, hear beets among others respectively. Dinner and overnight stay at Akagera Game Lodge

Day 2: Game Drive and Boat Ride On Lake Ihema

Dawn game drive in Akagera national park in search of some of the big five and other wild animals and birds like lions, elephants, buffalos, giraffe, hyenas, waterbucks, bush bucks, oribi, warthogs, hartebeest, and different bird species. Return to the lodge for refreshment, breakfast and lunch, and afternoon prepare for a canoe ride on Lake Ihema and here you will spot aquatic wildlife like hippos, crocodiles and much more birds and animals along the shores of the lake. Return to lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Akagera-Ruhengeri

Take another amazing morning game drive, have breakfast and then drive to Ruhengeri. With our lunch en-route, take visit different communities and learn more about Rwanda’s culture and style of living. Learn how to produce Alcoholic drinks from sorghum and bananas, make hand crafts from locally produced materials. Learn how to make traditional local dish. After all these experiences, proceed to Ruhengeri. Dinner and overnight stay at Gorilla Nest Lodge, Kinigi Guest House / Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge

Day 4: Gorilla trekking experience

After our breakfast prepare for briefing from park officials and after enter into the jungle to search for the shy mountain endangered gorillas. Requirements like traveler boots, hut, insect repellent, sun screen, rain gears, packed lunch and bottled water are must and other tools that one may need once in the tropical rain forest. Return to lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 5: Golden Monkey Trek

After breakfast at the Lodge, you will go for Golden Monkey trekking within the Volcanoes National Park. These Golden Monkeys are the most endangered primates with in the forest. This activity will not take long like as it is when tracking the Gorillas. You will spend also less time with these primates. Return to your lodge for lunch after which you will either relax at the lodge or take a short community tour to the nearby towns and villages. Return to lodge for Dinner and overnight.

Day 6: Volcanoes-Nyungwe

After breakfast at your lodge, drive to Kigali city for lunch and after head to Nyungwe forest National Park. Have en-route visit the old King’s Palace in Nyanza. Dinner and overnight stay at Nyungwe Forest Lodge / Gisakura Guest House

Day 7: Chimpanzee Trekking

After breakfast prepare for briefing from park officials and then go for chimpanzee trekking. This experience does expose you to variety of wildlife species that this forest offers such as the L’Hoest’s monkey and the grey-cheeked mangabeys are often sighted. The birds are spectacular, though as in most tropical forests, you’ll have to look hard for them. Giant hornbills, great blue turacos and red-breasted sparrow hawks are amongst the specials, of which 24 are endemic to this section of the Rift Valley. Return to lodge for lunch and after take evening walk around the Tea plantation. Dinner and overnight stay at Nyungwe forest lodge / Gisakura Guest House

Day 8: Forest walk

After a morning breakfast, start your brave day with your packed lunch, safari boots, hut, insect repellent, sun screen, rain gears and others needed while in tropical rain forest for a full day forest guided walk with in Nyungwe Forest National Park. On this long walk, you will visit the Kamiranzovu waterfalls and enjoy your picnic lunch from there. On this walk expect to see a variety of birdlife species and also primates like monkeys. Return lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 9: Nyungwe-Kigali

After breakfast return to Kigali for a city tour to local markets, shopping souvenirs or board your home flight.
